Brush Up On Your Fairytales
I tuned in to last night's ABC premiere of Once Upon A Time and was very pleased to not be disappointed by this show. Here's a quick summation.
It appears the premise of this show is centered around the fairy-tale of Snow White post-happily-ever-after. It seems the Evil Queen casts a curse on Snow White and Prince Charming and their offspring robbing them of their memories.
Fast forward to modern times, viewers get a chance to meet Emma, a bail bonds woman and the long, lost daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming. To add to the mystery, Emma who was "abandoned" as a baby is tracked down by her long lost son Henry, whom she gave up for adoption. Interestingly enough, Henry, Emma's son, Snow White and Prince Charming's grandson is the adopted son of the Evil Queen...in modern times.
Henry shows Emma his fairytale book which is filled with stories or fairy tales that I am guessing will unfold over the season. After Emma's son takes her to Storybrooke, Maine, she meets a couple of characters like Mr. Gold (a.k.a Rumplestiltskin) and Regina (a.k.a the Evil Queen) Emma decides to stick around as these two clearly raise her interest.
We are also reunited with Snow White, Henry's school teacher and Prince Charming, who we meet in a hospital bed. Keep in mind however, these people do not know who they are thanks to the Evil Queen's curse.
There were a couple of subtle jokes in the first episode. For example, the Evil Queen invites Emma into her home upon returning Henry for a glass of apple cider. On the Evil Queen's table is a plate of red apples.
Although I'm not positive, based on the first episode, I believe this show is going branch out beyond the Snow White fairy tale, pulling in other stories. Unless you have kids, many of us probably haven't seen or heard some of these fairy tales since we were kids so get ready to google.
Considering that this is a television show, there was a fair amount good cinematography and special effects.
I give this show 3.5 out of 5 stars.
